There's an awesome website called The True Size Of… that lets you drag and drop countries around the map to compare their relative size.
How big is the country you live in compared to other countries? If you use a standard map to answer that question, you may get some misleading input. A globe would give you a much better idea of relative country size, but why is that?
When you try to take an image that’s stretched over a sphere and flatten it out, the image becomes distorted. Even the most widely used map projection, the Mercator, created in 1569 by a Flemish cartographer and geographer, Geradus Mercator distorts the poles greatly, and every feature away from the equator is not represented at its true size.

오늘은 정말 재밌는 사이트를 소개하려고 합니다.
'The True Size'
우리는 지구본을 통해 지구를 보는 것에 익숙합니다. 그러나 우리가 흔히 보는 세계지도는 '메르카토르 도법'으로 제작되었습니다.
점장도법으로 알려진 메르카토르 도법은 1569년 네덜란드의 게르하르두스 메르카토르가 발표한 지도 투영법으로 지도에 많이 사용되는 대표적 도법입니다.
적도에서 멀어질 수록 축척 및 면적이 크게 확대되는 단점이 있습니다.
이런 도법으로 제작된 지도를 보면 실제 면적과 지도 사이에서 면적에 차이를 가질 수 있습니다.
'The True Size'는 지도에 나와있는 국가를 지정하여 다른 국가와 비교할 수 있습니다. 그럼 먼저 사이트로 이동해볼까요.

제가 조금 조정을 했는데 전세계 국가들이 한눈에 보입니다.
조금 더 확대를 하고 좌측 상단에 검색창에 'korea'로 검색을 합니다.
지도는 구글 지도를 사용하고 있습니다.
파란색으로 '대한민국'의 면적이 표시가 됩니다. (이 표시를 지우고 싶으면 마우스 왼쪽 버튼을 클릭합니다.)
당영하지만 울릉도가 한국에 포함되어 있는 것이 좋고, 울릉도 동쪽이 일본해로 표기되어 있는 것이 불만이네요.
지정된 '대한민국' 면적을 다른 면적과 대조할 수 있습니다.
'간도'로 알고 있는 '블라디보스토크'와 대조를 해보니 '블라디보스토크'가 얼만나 큰 땅인지 알수 있네요.
'china'로 검색하여 '중국'을 지정하였습니다.
이 사이트를 알게된 블로그에서 '아프리카' 면적이 '중국'보다 크다고 해서 실험을 하고 싶었거든요.
'중국'을 '아프리카'에 대조해보니 정말 크다는 것이 보이네요.
비슷한 방법으로 여러 나라를 불러와서 대조할 수도 있습니다.
중국, 미국, 인도, 일본, 한국을 '아프리카'와 비교하니 그래도 아프리카가 더 커보입니다.
